I <3 Farmers’ Markets

Is there anything more Berkeley than going to the farmers’ market? 🧺🌽🍅🥬🍊

Showcase

This website and art piece is a homage to my love for Bay Area farmers’ markets. From the website, you can see the weather, seasonal produce, and open markets in the East Bay and San Francisco for your day of choice. Take a quick glance at the fridge or wall where you display the optional embroidery hoop (with an LED matrix) to see it cycle through the fruits and vegetables of the month.

Ideation

Brainstorming

I went through a couple different ideas while brainstorming for this project, but was always fixated on finding a way to use the LED RGB matrix. I landed on the final idea of displaying the seasonal fruits and vegetables at the farmers’ market.

To research, I took a look online at other projects that incorporate fabric and textile art with electronics.

I also went through my Pinterest graphic design board to look at past designs I saved as an inspiration for my website design and to get a better sense of what look I actually wanted for my project.

Prototyping

I tackled this project by setting a list of steps to follow:

Steps:

  1. Figure out shades of discernible RGB
  2. Different fruit options per season, design on Google sheets by hand
  3. Research the fruits and vegetables in season each month and compile them
  4. Code cycling featuring with Arduino + RGB matrix
  5. Sketch out website interface
  6. Connect this to website that gives instructions
  7. Assembly embroidery hoop and test light intensity

Art

All Possible Fruits/Vegetables

I designed the pixelated fruits and vegetables by hand on a Google Sheets (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FCevS4d-0PS1t2NeGHq3AgpFlXufA_-X1SYZuwzGnf8/edit?gid=614392584#gid=614392584) and put together a quick Pinterest board for some inspiration. Produce from each month was taken from https://www.sfenvironment.org/vegetables-fruits-in-season-bay-area.
